How to Uncrate & Unpack an FWE Unit
The Easy Way
The Easy Way
Welcome to our guide on how to uncrate and unpack your new FWE unit. Proper unpacking is the first step to ensuring your equipment arrives safely and is ready to provide reliable performance in your food service operation. Whether your unit is shipped on a pallet or packed with protective padding, following these steps will help you handle it with care, avoid damage, and set the stage for its optimal use in your kitchen.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through each step, from moving the unit off the pallet to removing the final protective layers. Let’s get started and ensure your FWE unit is prepared for success right from the start!
In some cases, your unit may arrive securely fastened on a wooden pallet for shipping. This is done to protect the unit during transit and make unloading safer. To move the unit off the pallet, use a hand truck or dolly. Position the hand truck under the unit, ensuring it is balanced and secure before lifting. If necessary, have additional help on hand to stabilize the unit while it is being moved; remember that these units can be heavy and awkward to handle alone.
Carefully guide the unit off the pallet and lower it to the floor, avoiding any sudden movements that could cause the unit to tip or sustain damage. Once the unit is safely on the ground, inspect the area to ensure it is free of debris or obstacles that might interfere with the rest of the unpacking process. Taking these precautions not only protects the unit but also helps you avoid potential injury during this initial step.
Once the unit is safely off the pallet, the next step is to remove the protective padding and cardboard used to prevent scuffing or damage during transportation. FWE units are carefully wrapped to ensure they arrive in pristine condition, so it’s essential to handle this step with care to avoid accidentally damaging the unit’s surface.
Begin by cutting the plastic straps holding the outer layer of cardboard in place. A box cutter or utility knife works best for this task. Exercise caution while cutting to avoid scratching or marking the unit. Once the straps are removed, locate the staples that secure the cardboard pieces together. Gently pull apart the stapled sections to free the cardboard from the unit. It’s helpful to have a second person assist in stabilizing the cardboard as it is pulled away, ensuring a smooth and damage-free removal.
Next, focus on the corners of the unit, where additional cardboard padding is often taped for extra protection. Using the box cutter or utility knife, carefully cut the tape holding these corner pieces in place. Go around the entire unit, removing each corner’s padding and discarding the cardboard. This methodical approach ensures that the unit remains free of scuffs or marks while you complete the uncrating process.
After all the cardboard and padding have been removed, take a moment to inspect the unit for any residual staples, tape, or packing materials that may still be attached from the outer layer, leaving the styrofoam panels still attached for now. Properly discarding all packaging materials keeps the area clear and safe for the next steps in setting up your FWE unit.
With the main body of the unit mostly unwrapped, the next step is to remove the cardboard protecting the casters. This part of the process requires two people to ensure safety and prevent any damage to the unit or injury during handling.
While one person carefully tilts the unit to lift the back casters off the ground, the second person should remove the cardboard surrounding the rear casters. Be sure to tilt the unit slowly and securely, keeping it steady to avoid tipping over. Once the rear casters are free from their protective cardboard, gently lower the unit back to the ground.
Next, tilt the unit backward to lift the front casters off the ground. The second person can now remove the cardboard surrounding the front casters. It’s important to coordinate movements and communicate clearly during this step to maintain control of the unit. After the cardboard around the front casters has been removed, lower the unit back to the floor gently.
By carefully following these steps, you help ensure that the unit’s casters remain undamaged and ready for smooth movement. Always use caution when tilting the unit to prevent accidents and keep the unit in optimal condition.
Now that the outer layers of cardboard have been removed, it’s time to take off the last bits of protective material. Begin by carefully removing the plastic wrap encasing the unit. This wrap serves as the final protective layer, helping to secure the styrofoam panels during transit. Slowly peel away the plastic wrap, ensuring that it does not leave behind any residue on the unit’s surface.
Once the plastic wrap has been discarded, remove the styrofoam panels surrounding the unit. These panels are designed to cushion and insulate the unit against any bumps that may occur during shipping. Gently pull each panel away from the unit, taking care to avoid scratching or damaging its surface. Discard the styrofoam properly, keeping your workspace clear for the next steps.
Next, focus on the interior of the unit. Open the cabinet doors and carefully remove any styrofoam, cardboard, and packaging materials placed inside. This may include styrofoam padding around the shelving, cardboard inserts, and the operation manual typically located on the floor of the unit. Ensure that all internal packing materials are completely removed, leaving the unit’s interior clean and ready for use.
By removing these final layers of protection, you prepare your unit for inspection and setup, ensuring that it is in prime condition for your kitchen environment.
